When we write 1 + x , we mean (1+x)^1. A binomial expression. So therefore (1+x)^2 and higher ups are meant to give integers, when used in binomial fashion. One cannot divide and multiply by say 2x squared plus 3x plus 7 for instance for all the terms of RHS as the roots can be complex.
