Ponniyin Selvan 2

Yesterday I watched the Tamil movie 'Ponniyin Selvan 2'. The movie was released in Hindi and Tamil both in the cinema hall of Ranchi. I watched the Tamil version.

I was eagerly following the movie 'Ponniyin Selvan  1' and ' Ponniyin Selvan 2'. I read the book by Kalki Krishnamurthy too. I followed audio books also. I was always attracted by great kings and rulers. While I was in Delhi I had admiration for Mewar rulers and Delhi sultans. And Raja raja chola.  And Akbar. This admiration is deep inside me and I would wonder why they were great. The greatness of Raja raja chola was he sacrificed his becoming crown prince for his paternal uncle Madhuranthakan who was eligible to be the prince after Sundara Chola because of lineage.

The movie was great.  I liked it. In Ponniyin Selvan 2 they show great visuals and great fight sequences.  The music was great. And one piece in background with a lot of rhythms was just outstanding.  I am unable to recollect the situation when the music is played but I remember it being fantastic.  Some group of men shot. In 'Ponniyin Selvan 2', they have shown deep love of three pairs. Vanthiyedevan and Kundavai; Karikalan and Nandini and Ponniyin Selvan and Vanathi. And they also showed two crucial points realistic and historically correct. The death of Karikalan and the crowning of the prince.  I don't want to reveal more.

It's a definite watch for Tamil fans of history lovers. And if you're interested in spending a few hours in your weekend you may consider going to the cinema halls to watch the movie.

My good wishes.  Have a nice weekend  !!

Which is better? Vedic mathematics or Trachtenberg

This is what Alon Amit has to say on this question.

Alon Amit

Better" in what sense? Both systems consist of various tricks for doing calculations somewhat faster than you would without them. In either case, practice is more important than the particular system you choose to work with.

And in either case, the proficiency they give you is quite irrelevant for anything to do with mathematics or pretty much anything. Doing mental arithmetic is fun for some, so practicing it is (for them) a neat pastime. Other than that, digging into either "system" is a waste of time.

(Some folks, hearing how John von Neumann or Richard Feynman were very quick mental calculators, start believing that learning mental arithmetic could make them better mathematicians, physicists, computer scientists or people. It doesn't. Both von Neumann and Feynman had a deep interest in mathematics from an early age, and they played with it as other kids play with toys. This helped them develop a facility with mental calculation among other things, but more importantly they were eager to learn actual mathematics and became very good at it. The causal relationship doesn't work in the other direction.)

Delhi is India

Delhi is the capital of India.  It's responsibilities are high. And Delhiites have been great in maintaining its responsibilities of being an Indian capital. The people of Delhi have always shown great enthusiasm and positiveness in attending to Indian problems. In diplomatic channels especially.

People say Sikhs were massacred and looted after 1984.  But they have been hugged by Delhi people to such an extent that everything is forgotten.  It is bhool chookh maaf for any misgivings.

In finances we shall work in the same way. The Servants of people will deliver goods.

Jo bole so Nihal!! Sat sri akal !!

Comparison of pi formulas

My formula takes 35 iterations to reach 10 places of pi.

Gauss (Salamin and Brent) takes 3 iterations to reach 10 places of pi.

Ramanujan methods (two of them) takes just 1 iteration to reach 10 places of pi.

You can see for yourself. Ramanujan expression converges rapidly.

I was unable to test Chudonovsky expression.

Euler was God

I think it is good that I reached body Flux, relativity and an expression linking hour glass and consecutive numbers.

But Euler had these all. And he was terrific and exceptionally beautiful.  I am talking of root of -1. Or what is now the complex number i.

I am grateful to God and Wolfram alpha for I am able to see.

Fitment is extremely important in mathematics.  And complex numbers fits everything so well. I mean there is a perception of negative. Or antonyms.  Or -1. Or i squared.

And mathematics talks of i. Not i squared. So beautiful is it not?

I will never be able to get a middle part like in the case of i as Euler did. He said 1,i and i squared.  He did mathematics with i.

But I claim my mathematics as important.  Maybe not for engineers and technologists but art students commerce students diploma holders language students etc.

I have a hypothesis too. Approximations the way with four consecutive numbers does not exist with three consecutive numbers. My claim is.

But Euler was Euler.  God. But so is Gauss.  God. And so are others like Abel etc.

Have a nice day !!

India China tussle

India China tussle at Ladakh over border issue is very painful to read.
As a blogger I feel it is my duty to write my opinions on it.
Border means different thing to different people. When the British divided it was the British idea that mattered and most of the people obeyed.
But it is not British on the Ladakh side. India had rightly made Ladakh the union territory earlier.
But now there is a dispute.
India is the place where Gautama Buddha was born. I hope China respects the Buddhist philosophies and accepts peace. Hope the Chinese are "repelled" by India's respect for Buddha.

Bright Future

Exit polls indicate a simple majority for NDA. And good performance by BJP.  People wanted a change. People voted for change. Now, people have to work for change.
I was interested in exercising. My brother ordered Bullworker by parcel during school days. He also bought dumbells from market. Over the years I discovered that spiritual balance can be brought out only by exercises.
I was always a reader. I remember being a member of four libraries during my school days. But now, I find music more interesting. Currently I listen to web direct music; thanks to Nokia Mix Radio. However, I like reading economic news. I read Economic Times and mobile Mint everyday.
I am reasonably religious. I am reasonably good in music. Film music interests me. Younger music directors are quite good. I enjoy their music.
The reason I wrote about exit polls and about myself is because one has to give positive contribution to the new government.

My attempt at a Windows phone App:-

There are readymade templates available. These have to be filled with right information.

Nokia 720 having Windows Phone 7.1. Look at the background. There is an image !!

Below are the snapshots of Storyteller Apps in my laptop. You may observe my cartoons from my cartooning site. Also you may observe my dafli video posted on Youtube. Dafli video has been made using Youtube template in designer with search conditions "dafli+percussion".

Below is the snap taken from Nokia 1520 of my Nokia 720 having Cortana. Cortana is the yellow rectangle around the corner of the screen. She gives instruction in speech. You may observe that phone tile is missing. This is because it may not be needed as AI instructs about phone and I felt tile is not needed because of this. Also observe the background image.

Below is the status of my Lumia 720.

This is how my Nokia Lumia 720 looks like at present. Notice the Cortana tile.

The final position of my Nokia Lumia 720. No SIM. But as long as VoIP is there, using Nokia Lumia 720 this way is no way morally wrong.

Nokia 1520 is my regular phone now. I bought a Bose headset with Bluetooth from Reliance shop. Nokia 1520, Nokia Mix Radio and Bose goes just too good together . . .

The latest position of Lumia 720 is as below. Cortana is still unavailable in India. I was trying for evaluation purposes. It was enabled by changing region to US and not India. Now I have disabled Cortana. Region is India. Also, the access point was configured at last. The internet works, now, in Lumia 720. Hence the news section tiles.
Lumia 720 as on 30th June 2014.

Hot Winds

Summer has arrived in India. The temperature soars upto 43 degrees celcius in most part of India.
I take the following steps to beat the heat.
  1. Hygiene - During initial summer beginning, bacteria and fungi grow at a faster rate than the immunity of humans. Therefore, one needs to be careful and avoid drinking water from dubious sources. One must avoid outside food too. This is because water and food may have stronger bacteria and our immunity may be not that strong. The initial days are first 10 days. Currently, the initial period is over. Now you can have filtered water. You can also eat food outside.
  2. Keeping it cool - Crop your hair if you are a man. You may apply amla oil if you are a woman. Dabur Amla hair oil has thick oil base. So apply only a little. Oil bath also helps in keeping body cool.
  3. Keep pores clean - Scrub your body with loofah after applying soap. This will take out oil and dirt from pores.
  4. Cap and goggles - Wear a thin cap on your head and wear goggles while going out.
  5. Sleeping on floor - Try to get a nap in the afternoons on holiday on the floor without even a bedsheet or mattress. Just the floor and you. Switch on the fan. No AC or cooler. Try to get an hour or two of nap. Your body will get relaxed and you will also cool down.
  6. Cleanliness - When taking bath clean the feet completely with loofah and soap. The palm of the feet. The fingers of feet etc. This will energise you.
  7. Chywanprash - Chyawanprash can be taken if you are worried of getting infection due to water or food.
Follow these steps and you will be able to beat the heat better.

Telangana - A Burning Andhra Pradesh

Telangana has been formed by the central government. Telangana will be in south central area of India and Hyderabad is the major city. The other area of current Andhra Pradesh is to be called Seemandhra.
There are advantages to the politicians because more the states will imply more will be VIPs. And there was pressure from some politicians and student unions for Telangana. However common people in Seemandhra were against the division of the state as a division in a state means loss of pride and interference from people unconcerned on internal matters, among other reasons.
We all have been following formation of new states. Uttarakhand from Uttar Pradesh; Jharkhand from Bihar; Chattisgarh from Madhya Pradesh. Also Darjeeling from West Bengal.
Narendra Modi (the BJP leader) has said that the formation of Uttarakhand, Jharkhand, Chattisgarh made people happy and people exchanged sweets. On the other hand, Telangana is resulting in distress among people and violence. Also it may be noted that Darjeeling formation seemed sudden and without adequate preparations. Most of the commoners felt it was unexpected.
Telangana state will give voice to people of South India and I feel they will be heard in international arena. Because of powerful Muslim brothers in the Telangana region. It might be considered positive from this angle. But no one can predict future and what was the need to form Telangana before elections is a matter worth pondering.

Friendly China

Chinese president has proposed five point formula for improving Sino-India relationship. But China is reluctant to solve the border problem with India.
China's perception of border is amazingly beautiful. They "feel" for the people and environment and draw a boundary where the "feel" ends. India has had a boundary problems since independence. Most of the borders have been marked by Britishers. India does not have a feel for boundary like China. Many states adjacent to Pakistan like Gujarat feel Pakistan is acceptable. Some Indians even talk of "Akhand Bharat" which is India and Pakistan together as one country.
I take the China's perception of border very seriously and it is also fearful.
Another thing Chinese president talked about was business relationship. Cooperation in this area is possible. What I envision is, for example, what China makes in steel India need not make sort of cooperation. Also in electricity we can have an international grid from China. This will make the world less polluted as India is mainly coal powered electricity producer.
But these calls for visionary business thinking and what we see today is businessmen like Ruia and all involving in corruption. The business community is shameless and sell their own daughters for money.

Mehangai song from Chakravyuh

Birla ho ya Tata, Ambani ho ya Bata,
Sabne apne chakkar mein des ko hai kaata.
Are humre hi khoon se inka engine chale dhakadhak.

I feel the country has been damaged the most by double talking politicians. Do Shabdh to these politicians. Behen Chodh.
What if people are left unstable due to confusion? What if people has to act, with opposition from these politicians which can grow as they want?
Consider this against. You will be humiliated. You will be poor. You will have limited resources.

Fundamental Duties - This is what we need to do

Recently heard Dr.Karan Singh speaking about the present Indian society. He said that an Indian citizen should do his fundamental duties as specified in our constitution. Asking for fundamental rights and making other demands is valid only if one does his fundamental duties.
The Constitution says this on Fundamental Duties.

It shall be the duty of every citizens of India-
(a) to abide by the Constitution and respect its ideals and institutions, the National Flag and the National Anthem;
(b) to cherish and follow the noble ideals which inspired our national struggle for freedom;
(c) to uphold and protect the sovereignty, unity and integrity of India;
(d) to defend the country and render national service when called upon to do so;
(e) to promote harmony and the spirit of common brotherhood amongst all the people of India transcending religious, linguistic and regional or sectional diversities; to renounce practices derogatory to the dignity of women;
(f) to value and preserve the rich heritage of our composite culture;
(g) to protect and improve the natural environment including forests, lakes, rivers and wild life, and to have compassion for living creatures;
(h) to develop the scientific temper, humanism and the spirit of inquiry and reform;
(i) to safeguard public property and to abjure violence;
(j) to strive towards excellence in all spheres of individual and collective activity so that the nation constantly rises to higher levels of endeavour and achievement.

I feel that I am doing all my fundamental duties listed above, except perhaps point b). Though most of the ideals are fine for me with regard to our freedom struggle, there are some things which I dislike.

Auto Expo, Delhi's mega event. Is this what we need?

Delhi is going to host the Auto Expo. Another mini car to be displayed in the exhibition. Called RE60. Made by Bajaj. I do not think a car is what is needed. We need helicopters. Should not be difficult to make. Instead of the engine making the tyres rotating in this axis, the engineers have to make it rotate in an axis perpendicular to it. Fix up a big fan and we have a helicopter. Go to office, go for shopping saving a lot of time.
The cities are choked with cars. There is so much of pollution. Not my concern, says the industry.
And Tatas have failed with Nano. Could not venture into US full heartedly.
And here is the Delhi government or probably central government (an issue that needs discussion in parliament) who is organising Auto Expo. May be they did not have enough of cars. One thing is for sure, though. People are not fools. They may go in large numbers to the exhibition. But only to see what is in offer and to get pamphlets. They use their thinking when they want to do an actual purchasing. We may have a lot of politicians and businessman smiling so obviously in camera thinking they are fooling people. They are fooling themselves. When you have printing machine for money why make cars and make money?

2011 coming to an end but no end to our problems

Lokpal Bill is stuck in parliament. Anna Hazare, a great leader is unwell. Then there is the problem of Mullaperiyar dam. Mullaperiyar dam row spins my head and this issue blows off my thinking completely.
Then the Gita controversy is there with Russians. Then the economy of India. The economy issue also spins my head in equal measure and I loose hope.
Is there anything wrong in our thinking? Are we thinking and acting correctly?
Now come to Lokpal issue. People expect the most corrupt government in Indian history to make a law which is detrimental to its survival. How much feasible is it?
The Gita controversy now. I feel calling the Gita a blasphemy by University students is more acceptable than a Russian court passing a judgement on Gita.
The Mullaperiyar dam and the economy issue calls for a mature give and take by all the party involved every time. But given our ways for politicizing and creating a ruckus, our mind and mental make-up looses peace of mind every time you open the newspaper.
Are we too emotional? Do we want others to understand our emotions and show empathy? Is our thinking dictated by our emotions?
The year 2012 is around the corner. And I wish all the fellow bloggers a very happy new year. And I hope the new year will bring out a lot of happiness and peace to our countrymen too. For India is what I love the most and its well being my dream.

Cyrus Mistry - New Tata chief

Who are Tatas? No one in India can dare to ask this question. If someone asks, then obviously you need to ask him "Can you tell me which came first, the chicken or the egg?". Because to such scoundrels, this is the only way to deal.
What does Tatas expect from Indians? JRD was clear that India should not focus on economic prosperity.  Ratan Tata was aghast with the impossibility of the politicians. He also believed in doing the right things to build wealth and power.
Cyrus Mistry is the new chief of Tatas. Ambanis must be planning their moves. For one man's loss is another man's gain in the corporate jungle.
What do you all say?

Twelfth Five Year Plan

The five year plans were started during the Nehru era. Based on erstwhile USSR five-year planning. There is a division under Central Government called Planning Commission headed by Deputy Chairman(Planning Commission). The Deputy Chairman reports to the Prime Minister. Currently, Montek Singh Ahluwalia is the Deputy Chairman.

The Approach Paper for the twelfth Five-Year plan has been made after consultation with about 950 civil society bodies and after getting responses in facebook.com. The twelfth Five-Year plan has been criticized for focusing on GDP growth. The core issue of poverty and inclusive growth of all sections of Indian society has not been taken care of.

Now, firstly planning is done by the government in a communist setup. India currently is neither communist nor capitalist. A department like Planning Commission cannot just be wished away. Even though Planning Commission serves the aspirations of would be IAS officers by supplying Yojana magazine, this is not the purpose for which Planning Commission exists. It has to plan meticulously and plan for the poor as USSR would have done. Doing so is the duty of Planning Commission. It has failed to do so.

The focus is on increasing GDP of India and expecting that growth in GDP will result in removal of poverty.  The growth in GDP is being planned by increasing market of India. The argument of UPA govt. is, the increase in GDP will give funds to other plans like employment guarantee and food security and thereby poverty can be eradicated. Here, one must not forget that only a fraction of money meant for poor actually reaches them.

As far as I am concerned the poor are undernourished. The farmers have been isolated from the rest of the society. They are given free/subsidized electricity and are allowed to sell at a fixed minimum price. This  makes the farmer lazy and ignorant and is not involved with the market. A plan giving direct support to the undernourished and to poor farmers is the call of the day. They need to be directly helped.

Whatever be it, the government at the center wants to wash its hands off most of the well established systems. Agreed that Planning is planning and no action is guaranteed, but the least expectation was that Planning should not have been so arrogantly purposeless.

Gandhiji - Birth Anniversary

Today is October 2. The birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi. A national holiday.

Needless to say Gandhiji was born in Porbandar on October 2, 1869. Every Indian knows it  by heart. Also there is no need to mention that Gandhiji said "Truth and non-violence are my weapons".

It may be necessary for interested Gandhians or those who want to follow Gandhigiri in their personal life as to what Truth and non-violence may mean. Of course I have no idea as to what Gandhiji meant by those two words and I have learnt Gandhism from school textbooks only.But having a great respect for the great leader and being an accomplished blogger it may interest a few visitors to my site as to what truth and non-violence means to me.

The easier one first. Non-violence. I read in the papers what Baba Ramdev said before he began his protest fast in Delhi. He said,"I create no fear. I have no fear". I have absolutely no idea in what context he was talking. But the statement attracted me. I began to wonder. Then after a few minutes I realised that to me non-violence is "I create no fear. I have no fear.". It made logical sense. If you are non-violent you do not have to fear. You do not kill anyone or pain anyone. So you are free from fear. And secondly you do not create fear. Because you believe in it.

Truth. Truth is a difficult one. It may have meant God to Gandhiji. God is truth. Makes sense. Assuming it is true, then I look out for what God meant to Gandhiji. There is another thing that Gandhiji said. He said, "Cleanliness is next to Godliness.". So maybe being clean is Truth. Quite a far fetched one!!

Anyway when talking of cleanliness it is important to talk about excreta. Human excreta. How do you handle it in your mind. My advise is excrete thoughts of excreta. Do not think about it. Just let it go as you do in the toilet.

Gandiji was a great leader. I wonder whether he would have been happy with the state of affairs in our country. I doubt it.

Google's 13th anniversary - Successful entrepreneurship

The Google story teaches us how an idea can churn millions of dollars.
The best time for entrepreneurship is during the college days. Ideas are fresh. Enthusiasm is at the peak. So what if you do not have ideas of market, so what if you are ignorant of banking; the enthusiasm takes over and all that is needed is an understanding venture capitalist.
Any attempts to be an entrepreneur after landing up in a job is equivalent to being a traitor to one's current employer. It makes more financial sense to work in synergy with the current employer than attempt a jump into entrepreneurship.

9/11 - 10 years over. USA emerges strong.

What are the lessons India can learn from USA?
I feel India should become more federal. States should have more power in economy, law and order, education and other areas. Being in Delhi, I feel this need more because there is a confusion between state and center. I really do not know about other states, how independent they feel.
Do you feel corruption is the main issue? Is it federalism which is what is needed?
One thing I feel is opposition to any stream of thought will always be there. If a person opposes me does not mean he is my enemy. I should take it as a credit that he has considered my view and still feels he has much more relevant points in his favor.
